Tis the Season for giving

Right across the province, nonprofit and charitable organizations like SCARS provide vital programs and services that help make our communities more engaged, inclusive, and vibrant. Your cash donations are essential to these programs and services. With the help of the Community Spirit Program’s donation grant and charitable tax credit, your donation dollars can go even farther.

The donation grant allows us to apply for additional funding based on the total value of cash donations we receive from individual Albertans. When you make a cash donation to SCARS, or to your local museum, sports organization, health-related cause, and many other charitable and nonprofit organizations, your dollars can help them apply for a grant that supports operations, programs or capital projects. With annual grants available up to a maximum of $25,000 or $50,000 over three years, this grant puts your dollars to work!

You benefit too. When your federal and provincial tax credits are combined, you may be eligible to receive a 50 per cent non-refundable tax credit for every dollar you donate over $200 in a year. All you have to do is claim your official charitable tax receipts when you submit your personal income tax return.

For example, if you donate a total of $800 to one or more charities over the year, you receive a combined federal and provincial charitable tax credit of 25 per cent on the first $200, and a combined credit of 50 percent on every dollar above that amount. Your total non-refundable tax credit on an $800 donation is $350. We hope this gives you one more reason to support [name of organization] and a better quality of life in your community.

SCARS needs donations of blankets

SCARS needs blankets, especially wool, as well as bedspreads and quilts to take up to the pounds so that dogs waiting for our arrival have something nicer to sleep on than a cement floor. To donate to Second Chance Animal Rescue Society, please call (780) 466-SCAR or email us. Alternatively, you can drop off at any of our donation drop-off locations. Thank you!

Help find a missing SCARS Dog

Please help SCARS find a male, medium size (about 35 pounds), black terrier cross dog (looks like a Benji dog) that has been missing since Sept. 24. We do not have a photo, and he is neutered and his tattoo ZFN 1138Some volunteers were attempting to transfer this dog from one crate to another when he escaped. This dog is very shy and will likely run when approached. He was trapped in a humane trap at the spay clinic this past weekend at Wabasca. He was last seen in the area of Yellowhead Trail and 156 Street. If you spot him, please call SCARS immediately at 780-466-SCAR. We will likely need to establish where he is hiding out and then attempt to trap him again. Or, hopefully, he will be cornered in a yard and not be able to escape again. (We reported the loss of a larg Shepherd cross earlier but we had the wrong description. We are not looking for a Shepherd cross.)

SCARS receives a 2012 Community Spirit Program Grant

Summer 2012 - We are very pleased to announce that SCARS has received a $20,276.58 grant through the Alberta government's Community Spirit Program. We received this grant because of the ongoing generosity of our supporters. Did you know that if you donate more to registered charities like SCARS, you have an opportunity to receive a higher tax credit on your income tax return? As part of the Alberta government’s Community Spirit Program, the charitable tax credit will allow you to do just that. Through this tax credit, when the provincial and federal charitable tax credits are combined, Albertans now receive a 50 per cent non-refundable tax credit for every dollar donated over $200. If you make a donation to a Canada Revenue Agency-registered charity, you will receive a non-refundable charitable tax credit when you complete your annual income tax return.

More support from you also means there is a greater opportunity for SCARS to obtain a provincial grant to support our work in the community. The donation grant component of the Community Spirit Program allows our organization to apply for a grant based on the amount of money donated by individual Albertans over a 12-month period. The more funds we raise, the better chance we have of receiving a grant to support our operations, as well as the delivery of programs and services. Your donation counts! Through your support you are helping our community become stronger and more vibrant. For information on the Community Spirit Program, please visit www.communityspiritprogram.ca.

Announcing the SCARS Puppycam / thank you to Global TV

We are grateful to our friends at Global TV Edmonton for sharing a story about some adorable puppies that can be viewed live on the "SCARS Puppycam." SCARS took in 28 companion animals following the Alberta Spay Netuer Task Force event at Hobbema on April 13-15, 2012. One of those dogs was Georgia, a mom with very young puppies who was too sick to care for them. One of our loving foster homes stepped to help and they are sharing the experience of raising these puppies with all animal lovers.

Check out the April 26, 2012 story that includes a link to our puppy cam at Global TV Edmonton!

If you want to donate to the care of Georgia or her babies, please click here.

March 2012 SCARS Youtube video

There is a new SCARS Youtube video for March 2012. We won't give up on animals on need and, with your help, we will put an end to animal abuse and abandonment in Alberta! Please adopt, foster, volunter or donate today!

Help save a life - please donate to SCARS today!!!!

We don't often announce a desperate plea for donations but SCARS is facing difficult times. As a not-for-profit registered charity, we rely almost solely on donations to be able to provide all types of veterinary care for the animals that make it into our care. SCARS has two major fundraisers each year and we apply for grants, etc., but we are currently very short of funds. Our next major fundraiser, Canines & Cocktails, doesn't take place until October 14. SCARS is at a difficult point right now where the cost of our veterinary care commitments far outweighs the amount of donations we currently receive.

Imagine our horror at receiving a phone call from a clinic that there is a puppy with Canine Parvovirus. A puppy with Parvo can cost SCARS anywhere from $900-$5000 depending on how far along the disease has progressed. Imagine the horror of knowing that SCARS can simply not afford to take that puppy in simply because we are lacking the funds to pay for this puppy's survival.

Imagine a wonderful, loving, loyal dog who has been hit by a car and has lived in pain for months. SCARS receives a phone call that he has been "dumped" at the pound because his owners refuse to pay for the leg amputation required ($900) and SCARS is struggling to figure out how to pay for this animal so it can have a life free of pain. Sadly, right now SCARS  is faced with whether or not we can even take in this animal as he awaits cold and alone at the pound because we are simply OUT OF MONEY.

All of us non-profits ask for money... because we need it. SCARS has never wavered in its commitment to provide ALL veterinary care that animals in SCARS care required. SCARS is continuing to commit to this, but cannot continue to BRING IN any animals at this point that require medical intervention beyond the basics... and this is heartbreaking.

Please consider helping SCARS continue its important work. Please donate today (no amount is too small) and help SCARS help those that are in NEED. We provide tax receipts for all donations of $20 or more.

Thank you on behalf of the animals that your past donations have helped save. Dogs like Bella and Sara (a mom and pup who came to SCARS on the verge of starvation and covered with biting lice), Squeak (who had Parvo), Moxie (who needed a broken leg repaired), Floyd (who came in with a serious eye infection), and Milly (who had been hit by a car). Every dog has a story! You can find more stories on our website and on the notes section on our Facebook page.

SCARS assists with Slave Lake & area animal rescues

The Second Chance Animal Rescue Society (SCARS) extends its sympathy to the people affected by the fires that have devastated the Town of Slave Lake and surrounding area. It’s difficult to imagine the shock and hardship these people are facing. Our hearts also go out to the animals impacted by this terrible disaster and we are working tirelessly to assist where we can.

Please read our Slave Lake Rescue Story for information on how we are helping. We are now posting pictures from the rescue operations. If you can, please donate to SCARS. We are very short of funds right now and this influx of animals will increase our costs. Donations will go towards helping the animals currently in our care and our ongoing rescue efforts. If you can, please become a SCARS foster home or adopt from us. We are desperate to create space in our foster homes!

Please join us in thanking Paradise Pet Centre

The Second Chance Animal Rescue Society (SCARS) is very grateful to the owners and staff of Paradise Pet Centre for their decision to exclusively adopt dogs/puppies and cats/kittens from local rescue shelters beginning in January 2010.

We are thrilled they believe it their responsibility to help find homes for abandoned and unwanted animals. Their store has always supported SCARS through donations and sales of our calendars, but we are truly touched by the kindness and wisdom of their decision to voluntarily stop selling dogs and cats. We know their decision took courage, but we are certain they will be helping to reduce the number of homeless and abandoned pets in Alberta.

Please join us in thanking them for taking a leadership role that we hope other pet stores will follow. We believe their decision was not only an ethical one, but one that will ultimately benefit their business as well. Clearly, they care about animals and we hope their customers will thank them by purchasing your products and services. You can contact them at:

Paradise Pet Centre, #50 - 580 St. Albert Rd., St. Albert, AB  T8N 6M9  http://paradisepetcentre.com or phone 780-459-6896

SCARS joins with Prairie Animal Rescue Society (PARS)

January 19, 2011 - SCARS is very pleased to announce a merger with Prairie Animal Rescue Society (PARS). PARS will cease to exist as a separate charity, but the work they do will carry on and be incorporated into SCARS operations. PARS and SCARS have worked closely together for many years so this was a natural next step. Like SCARS, PARS operates through a  network of private foster homes. The largest of these foster homes is located at Terra McLean’s farm near High Prairie. We are very pleased to welcome Terra and her team into the SCARS family.

Help SCARS create a book of rescue stories

SCARS is putting together a book of stories about our wonderful rescue dogs and we need your help! Of course, each of our dogs has an interesting story; but they need the people in their lives to put their stories into words. So, please think hard about the SCARS dogs you have adopted, fostered or interacted with in some other way, and send us their stories!

There are many things that will be of interest to our readers. Did your SCARS dog overcome great odds to get to the point of rescue, or adoption? Did it face health issues, injuries from abuse/neglect, or some other challenges? Has a SCARS dog inspired changes in how you live your life? Have you learned something from your interaction with a SCARS dog? Does he/she make you laugh? Or made you cry? These are just a few examples of things people will enjoy reading about.

We ask that your story be no more than 1500 words. It will be subject to editing by SCARS. If you are thinking of writing a story but are pressed for time or don't have confidence in your writing skills, feel free to send us information in point form or a rough copy. We will ask our "ghostwriters" to develop it for you.  If you have a photo, please send it along. Visuals help bring stories to life.

Authors of stories that are chosen for the book will receive a free copy of the book and a SCARS t-shirt. The deadline to submit your story is June 30, 2011. Our goal is to release the book as a fundraiser in time for Christmas 2011.

To submit your story, or if have any questions, please email scars@scarscare.org

SCARS receives grant from HSI

We are thrilled to announce that SCARS is receiving a $2,500 grant from the Humane Society International/Canada in support of our ongoing animal rescue operations. Here is a quote from their message to us: “Congratulations on being chosen for HSI Canada’s 2010 Animal Rescue Fund grant! We’re so happy to be able to award this grant to you and support the wonderful work you do.” Sarita Marje-Donaldson, Office Manager / Campaigns Assistant, Humane Society International/Canada.

From their website: Humane Society International is one of the only international animal protection organizations in the world working to protect all animals—including animals in laboratories, farm animals, companion animals, and wildlife—and our record of achievement demonstrates our dedication and effectiveness. You can learn more about them at www.hsicanada.ca.

Congratulations to Deb Kardash - winner of the Black Eyed Peas tickets!

Congratulations to Deb Kardash and family for collecting over $1,800 in pledges and winning the pair of tickets to the sold out August 23 Black Eyed Peas concert. What an amazing accomplishment! Deb and her family have been an active SCARS foster home for many years. They have rehabilitated over 50 animals in need, many of which were severely sick and/or injured. We can't think of anyone more deserving of this prize!

SCARS is very grateful to the generous owners of Instabox Alberta Inc. for donating the concert tickets. Thanks to everyone who participated in the Tails on the Trails Pawsathon on July 10.

Visit our Past events page for a summary and pictures of this year's event which raised over $30,000.

2010 Community Spirit Grant

May 29, 2010 - We are very pleased to announce that SCARS has received a $25,000 grant through the Alberta government's Community Spirit Program. We received this grant because of the ongoing generosity of our supporters. Only those organizations that raised donations totalling $88,000 (or more) qualified for the full amount as explained in the government’s April 27, 2010 news release. For more information on the Community Spirit Program, which includes generous tax incentives for donors, visit www.communityspiritprogram.ca.

For several years now, this generous company has been sponsoring the Pet of the Week advertisement in the Athabasca Advocate newspaper. We “paws”atively love you for your ongoing support of animals in need!

Dr. Dan Martin offers a free chiropractic treatment to SCARS foster dogs

April 29, 2010 - Dr. Dan Martin, Certified Animal Chiropractor, has very generously offered to provide a free chiropractic adjustment to all SCARS foster dogs. We are very excited to welcome "Dr. Dan" as a SCARS volunteer. We are very touched by his generosity and we were even more impressed when we found out he is also passionate about horse rescue.

He has been a certified animal chiropractor since 1992. He was an instructor for the course from 1995-2002. He has extensive knowledge in care, nutrition and therapy. Dr. Martin is now treating animals full time and has retired from his human practice.

Global Pet Foods

February 2010 - SCARS would like to thank Pouya & Mahmoud Assadi of Global Pet Foods, Heritage Village, 2027A - 111 Street, Edmonton for inviting SCARS to hold a successful adoption event at their store on February 27, 2010. As well, we want to thank them for choosing SCARS as their charity of choice for the Global Pet Foods February 6-14, 2010, “Show us your heart” fundraising drive through the Canadian Pets and Animals Foundation and help local shelter animals find homes of their own.

Donation from the Silent River Benevolent Foundation

February 2010 - SCARS would like to thank the Silent River Benevolent Foundation in Stony Plain for their very generous donation of $3,000. Through their partnership with Silent River Kung Fu, the Silent River Benevolent Foundation supports community projects and initiatives. SCARS is lucky enough to be among the charities that benefit from their annual fundraising efforts.

SCARS volunteers, Ron and Julie Bayliss, attended the Foundation’s Chinese New Year Banquet and Black Belt Promotion Ceremony on Saturday, February 20, 2010, where they were presented with the donation cheque. This Foundation has supported SCARS for several years with donations of this amount.

SCARS receives grants during 2009

During 2009, SCARS qualified for two amazing grants that we will use in support of our ongoing rescue efforts. They are:

Community Spirit Grant - In May 2009, thanks to the generosity of our supporters, SCARS applied for and received a $25,000 grant through the Alberta government's Community Spirit Donation Program. Only non-profit and registered charity organizations that have received more than $1,000 in annual donations from individual donors are eligible. SCARS received the maximum amount given through the program because of the generosity of our donors, and that is yet another reason why ongoing financial help from our supporters is so important. For more information on the Community Spirit Program, which includes new tax incentives for donors, visit www.communityspiritprogram.ca.

Donner Canadian Foundation Grant -  In October 2009, SCARS received a $20,000 grant from the Donner Canadian Foundation. We were thrilled that an anonymous supporter recommended us to this organization which invited us to apply for funding. For more information on the Foundation, visit their website at www.donnerfoundation.org.

SCARS featured in Avenue Magazine

November 2, 2009 - Andrea Cairns, SCARS Director, was named one of Edmonton's Top 40 Under 40 by Avenue Magazine for "dedicating her spare time to rescuing animals and helping SCARS become the biggest rescue organization in the province." To read the article, click here

Call for volunteers and donations

October 2009 - We announced in mid October that the Bigstone Cree Nation, six hours north of Edmonton, was hiring an animal control officer to conduct a two-month dog collection and was asking SCARS to help re-home these animals. This collection has now been postponed until further notice, but dogs continue to come to SCARS from this area and we are always in need of new volunteers! Here are some ways to help:

  • Become a foster home - Do you want to help save an animal's life? As a foster home, you will provide temporary care for an animal in need until SCARS can find it a permanent home. Becoming a foster home is easy and there is absolutely no cost or long term obligation. We match you to an animal that suits your lifestyle and level of experience, and then we provide food, supplies, veterinary care, and any help you need with training or transportation. You provide the warm shelter and love!
  • Donate supplies - If you are able to donate supplies such as crates, blankets, towels, food, food dishes, and so forth, please drop them off at one of the following businesses that have generously agreed to support SCARS:

        Sadie's Pet Stop – North

5716-111 Street

  • Donation drivers - We also need people willing to pick up donations at the venues listed above and deliver them to SCARS.
  • Drivers for "Operation Doggie Railway" - We need volunteer drivers to help transport dogs. SCARS will provide crates or blankets (if a crate will not fit in your car). Mileage will be reimbursed as well.

For more information or to volunteer, please contact us!

Making your donations count event more

August 2009 - Albertans are already some of the most giving and generous people anywhere, and as an organization that relies on that vibrant giving spirit to carry out our important work, SCARS wants to tell you about a new program that could make it even more worthwhile to support your favourite non-profit or charitable organization.

Did you know that if you donate more to registered charities like Second Chance Animal Rescue Society (SCARS), you now have an opportunity to receive a higher tax credit on your income tax return?

As part of the Alberta government's new Community Spirit Program, an enhanced charitable tax credit will allow you to do just that. Through this tax credit, when the provincial and federal charitable tax credits are combined, Albertans now receive a 50-cent tax credit for every dollar donated over $200.

If you make a donation to a Canada Revenue Agency-registered charity, you will receive a non-refundable charitable tax credit when you complete your annual income tax return. When the provincial and federal charitable tax credits are combined, Albertans now receive a 50-cent non-refundable tax credit for every dollar donated over $200.

More support from you also means there is a greater opportunity for SCARS to obtain a provincial grant to support our work in the community.

The donation grant component of the Community Spirit Program allows our organization to apply for a grant based on the amount of money donated by individuals over a 12-month period. The more funds we raise, the better chance we have of receiving a grant to support our operations, as well as the delivery of programs and services.

Your donation counts! Through your support you are helping our community become stronger and more vibrant.

When the provincial and federal charitable tax credits are combined, Albertans now receive a 50-cent non-refundable tax credit for every dollar donated over $200.

For example, if you donate a total of $500 to four or five charities over the year, you will receive a combined federal and provincial charitable tax credit of $200. This means that the donations would cost you about $300, which is the equivalent of donating 82 cents a day, or about the cost of buying a newspaper. As a result of the enhanced tax credit, you may consider donating more to your favourite charities.

To donate to SCARS, visit http://www.scarscare.org/Donate.asp.

SCARS Vests

July 2009 - SCARS would like to thank Greg Hunter for gathering donations to go towards more adoption/safety capes. With the help of Barb, Laurie, Jean, Eve, Michelle, Eve, Jay, David, Paul, Maureen and Miguel he gathered enough funds to cover 15 more capes in our next order. These capes have safety reflective strips and allow the public to easily identify who is still available for adoption. We hope to eventually supply all of our foster homes with these coats to provide safety while out on their walks and identify them as a SCARS rescue.

If you see one of our rescues out and about be sure to go say hello!
