Luna (formerly Missy)
Luna
August 2011 - Greetings from the Murray family! This is an update on Luna (formerly Missy) whom we adopted on Aug 8th, 2009. We have finally taken a picture of our "Lunie" that we think does her justice. She has come a long way since we brought her home to live with Bruce, Heather, Alex and the 2 cats Poppy and Mr. Paws, (former strays also).
When we brought Luna home, we tried to take her for a walk the next day and she laid down on the driveway and would not budge. We did get her going but she repeated the laying down and not budging every fifty feet or so on the 3 block walk. We think that she thought we were getting rid of her, and she seemed happy to get back and stay in the house. When we took her to our regular vet we had to get 2 of the vet assistants to help push Luna into the examining room and up on the doggy scale.
She now gets her daily walk after Alex gets on the school bus and has her routes down pat, including the nice lady Betty up on the corner who always has dog cookies if she sees Luna coming. The vet is no longer a challenge either because Luna has figured out that all the staff want to pet her and give her cookies! If she wants attention when you are on the computer or ignoring her, she will butt you with her nose until you notice, and pet her, of course.
Luna knows walk, sit, wait, kennel, cross (the street), kong cookies, nice (when taking treats), and learned on her own not to move when the leash is dropped. She still is not great at ignoring other dogs on walks, but we are working on it. She has been to stay at the kennel for holidays and gets a lovely grooming before she comes home, they love her too!
Luna is happiest when she can lay down near us, sneak the cat food, or hears the word walk. She doesn't like walking on really cold days and will happily turn around and head for home before getting very far. When we adopted Luna she was compared to a coyote by members of our family and they all acknowledge that she has come a long way in how great she looks.
Luna is our 3rd rescue dog and we are always blown away at how lucky these dogs are to be given the chance to find their furever families.
